Background
The TNFSF13 gene is located at chromosomal region 17p13.1 and is expressed in various tissues and organs including heart muscle. TNFSF13 is a regulator of the development and function of B cells. TNFSF13 has important roles in normal immune responses, and also in the development of autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. Plasma levels of TNFSF13 are reported to be increased in patients with multiple sclerosis, Sjögren's syndrome, systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis. The levels of TNFSF13 are also demonstrated to be significantly higher in the synovial fluid of patients with rheumatoid arthritis than in the serum, suggesting that this protein may be produced locally at the site of inflammation[1].
